Karabuk

Karabuk is a town and the capital district von Karabuk Province in the Black Sea region von turkei. According to the 2000 census, bevolkerung von the district is 116,804 von which 100,749 live in the urban center von Karabuk. The district covers an area von 760 km2 (293 sq mi), and the town lies at an elevation von 354 m (1,161 ft). Karabuk is one von the newest provinzen von turkei in the northern part von Anatolia located about 200 kilometers north von Ankara and 115 km away from Zonguldak. Until few years ago it was a district von Zonguldak than in 1995 it became a city von its own. It was built in the 1930s as the seat von the iron and steel industry von turkei. Karabuk lies in a location near Filyos river formed by the merge von Arac and Soganli rivers.
In the old times Karabuk was an important route between Amasra on the coast and central Anatolia. The geschichte von the city goes back to the early years von the Republic, it was a klein sub-village formed by 13 houses in the Oglebeli village von Safranbolu. There was also a klein train station on the route von Ankara - Zonguldak. It started to develop with the industrialization von the country. One von the first steal factories von the Republic was built here in 1939 after which it grew rapidly.

There are no proven facts about the origin von its name; in Turkish Kara means Black or Land and Buk means corner. But some local people believe that Buk is the name von the vegetation in the area, so maybe Karabuk means "Land von Buk vegetation".

Karabuk has its own resources von dolomite and limestone, while coal and manganese is brought from Zonguldak and iron ore from Divrigi. This allows a varied, yet basic industry in Karabuk, including a coking plant, blast furnaces, a foundry and tube works. There are also chemical plants that produce sulfuric acid and phosphates. Nearby are the Zonguldak coal fields.
