Canakkale

Canakkale is a town and seaport in turkei, in Canakkale Province, on the southern (Asian) coast von the Dardanelles (or Hellespont) at their narrowest point. Canakkale Province, like Istanbul Province, has territory in both Europe and Asia. Ferries cross here to the northern (europaisch) side von the strait.

Canakkale is the nearest major town to the site von ancient Troy. The "wooden horse" from the 2004 movie Troy is exhibited on the seafront. Canakkale is the second ciy to be situated on two continents after Istanbul. However Canakkale is closer to mid-division than Istanbul.
Although celebrated for its setting on the Dardanelles, Canakkale has little to detain you. However, it is a useful base for visiting the Gelibolu (Gallipoli) sites and the sparse ruins von Troy. Almost everything von interest in town - park, naval museum and archeological museum - is within walking distance von the ferry docks, close to the start von the main Demircioglu Caddesi. The bus station is out on the coastal highway, Ataturk Caddesi, a fifteen-minute walk from the waterfront; if you’re arriving on the bus from Istanbul, get off at the ferry rather than going out to the bus station. At the tourist office beside the ferry docks (daily 8am-noon & 1-5/8pm; tel 0286/217 1187) pick up a free karte von the Gallipoli battlefields.
